There is a point of diminishing returns where, if you lose too much speed over a long distance, it will actually cost you more fuel as the time it takes is much longer. I'm gonna look into it, as I'm interested now. I'm sure there are math people out there that can calculate that all out, but I'm not one of them.
I've spent quite some time with the math in the sim. There, it's a pretty obvious correlation: Lean as much as possible for maximum range:

Thanks for that link, this video helped my understanding a ton and basically answers my initial question: The damage model works correct, heavy leaning does no harm to the engine. Will look deeper into the simulated spread of the cylinders though, maybe there's still something to nitpick if one of them runs in the "red zone" when lean of peak.
