EDM LOP Leaning is wrong (still)
-
Hi,
I noticed something else while performing a lean-of-peak mixture adjustment.
After setting the mixture and reaching the RICHEST indication, the manual states:"This configuration can be further monitored by pressing the 'LEAN FIND' button, which will show the EGT of the last cylinder to peak, and the fuel flow relative to peak. Negative fuel flows indicate operating lean of peak."
However, when I press the LEAN FIND button, nothing happens.
This feature works as described in the manual on the Duke Piston, but I don't think it does on the Bonanza or the Commander.
Am I missing something again, or is this function not currently implemented on these aircraft? -
This might be the reason why i never understood the leaning function of this gauge. I always expected it to behave like described in the real manual I found online.

I would like to step into this tread. Some time ago, I also reported that the BlackSquare EDM-800 probably was not performing like it should. see: https://community.justflight.com/topic/4426/i-believe-the-edm800-is-not-working-like-it-should
I just flew two hours in the Commander, the whole flight at 8.000 ft. trying to get the right procedure on leaning. I did it over and over again but did not find the right method. both methods do not work.
This is what the JP instruments handbook says (For me only the first sentence part works, the rest is not):
The EDM will indicate success in finding a peak by displaying the word LEANEST for two seconds and flashing the peaked EGT column. The Scanner
Information Area will also display the current value for the peaked EGT on the left, and the word SET on the right (or fuel flow value, if so equipped), for final adjustment of the mixture. The peak EGT value encountered during leaning is remembered by the EDM and can be displayed by holding the LF button during Lean Find Mode.( I do not see that the peak value is remembered by the EDM-800, holding the LF button does not indicate it.
May be I make a mistake, but I think I know what I am doing because i worked with the EDM-800 in RL - but that was until 14 years ago. I really would like to fly the BlackSquare aircraft how we do in RL so please tell me what i do wrong or it would be nice to know clearly where the BlackSquare EDM is incomplete.)@Bentree Unless I misunderstand, the only part you're saying that is missing is that you can't recall the peak EGT by holding Lean Find? I've already implemented this for the next update.
@Ratman Yes, I made a single character mistake when converting the EDM from the twin engine version to the single engine version. Already fixed for the next update.
@Rhinozherous Despite the things mentioned here, you really shouldn't have had too much trouble with the leaning functions, as I've been using them for performance tuning in my aircraft this whole time. Let me know if there is anything else you struggle with, however.

@Black-Square I will trie again after the first update. Thank you offering help! If needed, I will come back to it.

I think this issue also existed in the Bonanza. I haven't flown it for quite some time, so I'm not sure whether it has already been fixed or if it behaves the same way as the Commander.
I'll check it on my simulator when I get home. If it turns out to behave the same way as the Commander, are there any plans to update it as well? -

Thank you very much for all your replies. I've never experienced support that was this fast and helpful.
Your support is every bit as impressive as your products. Keep up the fantastic work—you've definitely earned more of my money in the future because it's well deserved! -
I absolutely second that! I'd say, the best and most active support from the actual dev on the market.
Plus: You actually care about input and suggestions. This really is a major positive point from a user perspective.@MatzeH84 said in EDM LOP Leaning is wrong (still):

That's because I am mentally broken in just the right way that makes me obsessive about virtual airplanes. It would not be possible for me to stop, even if I wanted to.

Your feedback and actions in the after market is great, thanks !
To be honest, I would really like you to make clear in wich way the BlackSquare EDM-800 is true to life and in wich way it is not.
I have not be able to replicate true to life ROP of LOP handling in all BlackSquare aircraft (Except for the Starship I have them all).
Although it is 14 years ago I worked with it in Real Life, at that time I did not had so much difficulty leaning ROP of LOP in the real aircraft.Unless I am doing something wrong, for me in your EDM equipped aircraft it does not work, so it would be really nice the get to know what we can and can not expect it to do compared to the real thing. Until now I expected the BlackSquare EDM-800 to work as the real counterpart.

@Bentree Well, as you've read above, I've now completely overhauled LOP mode for much greater accuracy, so I'm not sure how much it's worth discussing the old code here. However, I'm still not sure what you mean by "it does not work". You can find peak EGT, and you can operate at some relative EGT offset below it. If it's the exact sequence and behavior of the unit that you're concerned about, then it will hopefully be much more to your liking soon.

Just to tag onto the LOP discussion, leaning LOP really pushes the CHTs up, which is the opposite of what I'd expect-- I'm having to crack Cowl flaps pretty frequently to stay below a conservative 380-- having not flown a 114, I don't know how normal that is.
If I lean more LOP, they seem to go even higher and you can lean pretty (probably a bit too?) aggressively before the engine starts complaining. In reality I'd expect CHT to fall off pretty hard anywhere leaner than best power, and the engine should falter sooner once you get past 50F LOP, imo.
I'd imagine a lot of this is MSFS being MSFS, but thought I'd share my thoughts anyway.
(Edit: I'm in the TN version)
