The Turboprop engines on the King air are free turbines.
Simple explained, the free turbine consist of the compressor, whivh is directly coupled to the gasproducer turbine.
This assembly works more or less like a normal jet engine.
The propeller is via a gearbox connected to the free turbine, which isn´t connected to the gas producer section described above (Jet engine).
The exhaust gas flow from the gasproducer drives the free turbine i.e the propeller.
When You start the engine, only the gas producer starts rotating - You can hear the engine spool up.
Once the gas flow is sufficient to drive the free turbine, the propeller starts to rotate.
