Radar "Target Alert" function

On the CDU's RDR FUNCTIONS screen, what does the TARGET ALERT function do? The manual doesn't say anything about it.

The ND will display "TGT" at the top of the screen to alert you of newly detected severe weather targets, but this is one of the only things in the entire aircraft that I couldn't think of a good way to implement. I have actually thought of a way to do it since then, but it would take some experimenting with other avionics before I would take the considerable time necessary to port the capability back to Starship. Good question.
