King Air: correct sequence to capture altitude?

The manual does not go in detail on this..
I can select the target altitude on the altitude selector, but when I turn on the autopilot.. should I select VS, and also ALT SELECT?
Or is this ALT SELECT not operational?
I have been using CLIMB, just to have a way to get to target altitude, but do other modes work as well? -
@bert-pieke I use VS. I believe alt select targets current altitude

An older thread but I have the same question. I can't quite figure out the purpose of "ALT SEL" on the controller in this instance.
