Autopilot VS mode problem

Hi, just started flying this airplane... The autopilot has me baffled.. In HDG mode, I can adjust VS up/down with the Up/Down buttons, but in NAV (GPS) mode, these buttons make the selected altitude go up and down.. No way, I can find, to adjust VS.. other than switching to HDG mode..

The UP and DN buttons adjust vertical speed when the selected altitude is different than the captured altitude, and after you've pressed the altitude button. In other words, the correct procedure should be...
- Set new altitude with knobs.
- Press ALT.
- Quickly press UP or DN to set the desired vertical speed.

@Bert-Pieke If you press the ALT button, you can then use the up/down buttons to control the VS.

Hmmm, better read the manual... Why HDG mode worked differently than NAV mode is still not clear to me..
