Feature Request: Visual Hypoxia Effects
-
Hi Nick and the Black Square team,
I recently reached out to Just Flight support regarding this, and Ian suggested I bring the idea here to the community!
I'm absolutely loving the Analog Caravan. A thought came to mind that I know is not unique: what if the visual consequences of low oxygen could represented in the sim?
Right now, the oxygen gauge is a cool technical detail, but it doesn't feel "dangerous." Adding a gradual screen blur, tunnel vision, or "grey-out" as oxygen levels drop would turn that gauge into a legitimate and insidious emergency.
Curious to hear if anyone else would love to see this added (if possible, of course) to the already amazing product!
Thank you!

I find this a good idea. Would add a bit more weight on managing the oxygen.
To borough a phrase from a different franchise, “o7 CMDR and fly dangerous.”

Elite remains the premier VR experience, it's a shame Frontier ran it into the ground with Odyssey/space legs.

@vasco I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the aircraft! There are several other human factors and cabin environmental effects I would love to add to my aircraft, but there is no support for these in MSFS, either from the first person camera, or in the visual effects available to me within the aircraft model.
A while back, we discussed how to implement some sense of hypoxia in my aircraft, and settled on the alternate flashing of the cabin temperature lights to indicate a low blood oxygen concentration. If anyone has any other ideas, or has seen this implemented in a clever way before, I am always interested!

@Black-Square there should be support for some camera filters, that addon devs use for example for night vision by applying a heavy green tint to the camera. Could this be used with a black color to simulate blackout from lack of oxygen? And I think I have even seen a blur filter in some MSFS addon, but not sure.

@Randolf Could you find me some examples? I thought the night vision that everyone has been talking about recently was a new core feature for MSFS 2024. If you're speaking of the ones on FlightSim.to, I believe those are all based on external post-processing, like ReShade.

@Black-Square some military aircraft like the Miltech MH60 have night vision, and I've seen some crazy effects used in the Got Friends Wildcat's gun camera.

Not totally sure about this, will test later today. But I do remember there is f.E. some kind of heavy breathing going on if you pull extreme G-Forces. Maybe something like this could be used to simulate also oxygen deprivation.
If I recall correctly this happens f.e. in F/A-18, this would let me to assume it is some kind of core function of the sim. -

Miltech MH60
In their documentation, "Night Vision Goggles (FS24)" specifically calls out '24, so I assume that's the new simulator feature.
Got Friends Wildcat's gun camera.
That is the first effect that has made me wonder "how do they do that?" I think I have read about some HUD render-to-screen effects that are possible, so this might be essentially an instrument drawn over the screen. That's a possibility, but I would have to look into it more.
heavy breathing
This has come up in the past when we've discussed hypoxia, and I recall it generally being disliked as a solution. I know I have mask breathing sounds in several of my aircraft already, but those require the user to trigger them, so there shouldn't be any questions about "what is this sound?" If the community sentiment has changed, I'm always happy to consider this, though. If it's implemented in the F/A-18, I suspect that it's in its own sound package, and not as the simulator level, but I don't claim to know anything, either.
Thanks for your thoughts, guys. If you don't hear from me for a while, I'm off to record sounds from the Twin Commanders and King Air tomorrow!
