Loud creaks during flight
-
I asked AI but I don’t think it knows.
It’s great for immersion, I’m just curious what it is.
When I fly the blacksquare starship I occasionally hear a really loud creak during flight. What is that?

That creak might sound ominous, but it’s often just your ship talking back to physics. Most likely, that loud creak is caused by structural stress or thermal expansion. Starships—like BlackSquare’s—are put under serious pressure during high-speed maneuvers, especially in atmospheric transitions or while experiencing changes in velocity. Here’s what might be going on:
Possible Causes of the Creak
- Material Expansion & Contraction: Temperature changes—especially from reentry or entering colder regions of space—can cause metal or composite materials to shift slightly.

if it gets louder, more frequent, or happens during stable flight, it might be worth having BlackSquare’s maintenance crew take a closer listen.*

It's certainly nothing intentional, if it's as loud as you describe. Do you think you could catch this ominous creaking in a recording for me?
-
I’ll record my next couple flights. Usually happens at least once a flight. Of course now it probably won’t.

Mystery solved (I think). I recorded a flight where the creak happened but it wasn't in the recording, suggesting the sound was not coming from MSFS. I'm reading posts in OnAir discord that fragile cargo will creak during flight so that's almost certainly what's going on.
