Storm window causes overstress
-
On the Piston und Turbine Duke, opening the storm window causes the famous black screen (overstress).
E.g under these conditions:
Altitude, approx. 2500ft
Speed 120ktTo be on the safe side, I also tried depressurizing the cabin to equalize the pressure, did not help
Playing around with it, I noticed, that under normal condition at 20.000 feet, I cannot open the window (makes sense). Depressurizing the cabin then, I can open it, once the differential pressure drops below approx. 2psi, but leading again to an overstress.
Last test was sitting on the runway with the open window, everything is fine. But immediately on wheels off, the overstress is triggered. I can even have it opened without issues at 150kt rushing down the runway, as long as I do not lift off.
P.S.: I am on SU14

This is a problem with many addon airplanes. The side window is treated as a door for the purposes of sound manipulation. Asobo decided that any door open in flight should cause the airplane to immediately self destruct. Most people have long ago disabled the "airframe stress failure" option in the realism settings of the simulator menu to avoid this unfortunate way to end a flight.

@Black-Square I like the fact, that there is a possibility for the plane to break under overstress condition. Otherwise, it feel less immersive to have no consequences. I know that the Comanche doesn't cause self destruction when opening the side window.

@Black-Square if you were willing to work around the "window acts as a door" limitation in the simulator, as some aircraft have, it could be interesting to put some logic behind this, such as:
- When pressurised to any degree, the window can't be opened (accidental mouse click)
- No 'overstress' failure at low speed, but potential overstress if opening at high speed
It may not be worth the time investment to make such changes, especially if they impact the sound design, but I thought it might be an interesting idea to explore. If you prefer to keep within the simulator's regular standards and not deviate to special solutions too much, that is understandable.

@Mustang said in Storm window causes overstress:
When pressurised to any degree, the window can't be opened (accidental mouse click)
This is already implemented. The window will be increasingly "difficult" to open (opens slowly as pressure is lost out the window), up until the point where around 40lbs of pulling force would be required to open the window, at which point it will not open at all.
Yes, it's a sound limitation. It's something that could be fixed, and originally had been fixed for the Dukes, but got lost in translation while working with Boris on the soundpack. My other aircraft work that way because there was no way around it when using the default Asobo exterior models. I'll add it to the list and see if we can't make the modification, because it irritates me too.

OK! Thanks for the additional information. I dared not click the window in flight, even though I have the overstress option turned off, due to same issue catching me out on on take off in the Caravan many times before.
With that sim option turned off, it will be interesting to experiment with trying to open the window now :) I've owned the Dukes a week but only managed one short flight so far, such is real life. I did at least get an hour on the ground to run through the Turbine's checklists and experience all the click-y goodness in the cockpit. It was a very enjoyable hour even though the chocks never came out! I've barely scratched the surface but both aircraft are phenomenal. Your engagement here is also second to none.
The community seems overjoyed too, so keep up the stellar work and thank you!
