Starship Manual Suggestion
-
Hi Nick @Black-Square,
Been looking through the draft manual and also watching your latest video with V1, was wondering if in your control input/output section, whether adding a section on suggested mappings might be useful? Such as yoke buttons, thinking things like the checklist advance button could be easy to miss unless you watch the videos to know it's a thing? There are probably more you have included that I've missed as well.Looking forward to the release
Regards

There is an extensive section near the end with every control and annunciator input and output variable. L and H vars need an external program to access, but K vars use the stock sim bindings of roughly the same name. I think A and B vars do, as well.
That what you're looking for?

@jmarkows
Cheers have seen that..I'm suggesting that rather than having to look through all of the potential inputs/outputs there's a section that highlights the commonly used, or aircraft specific bindings like a quick start all grouped together...
So for example Checklist Line Advance Yoke Button H:MFD_LineAdvance is under MFD which certainly makes sense, however, the button is situated on the yoke so may make sense to have a separate yoke/throttle bindings, also including things like Native CWS (pitch sync) (which is under Primary Control Events Events) Not a biggy just might aid people jumping in and flying? Particularly where the control is specific to the type (e.g. Checklist Line Advance Yoke Button) Especially those that use native controls and not SPAD etc -
Also looking at the RW POM there is a Page Advance button on the pilot's right yoke horn? But I can't see mention of it? Non functional? Cheers
@hughesj2 The page advance is implemented. I just forgot to add it to the manual!
Your suggestion for a "suggested mappings" section is good! I can't swear that I will get to that before release, but when I have the time, I will add it to all of my aircraft. Thanks for the suggestion!

@Black-Square Thanks Nick, appreciate you have plenty on your plate and obviously a very minor point in the grand scheme of things. Interesting that I couldn't find a description for the Page Adv in the POM which was what led me to expect you to say "nice spot but it's not implemented in the real world" lol
On the mappings, will I will need to get axis and ohs or SPADnext to be able to bind the Line and Page Adv buttons, as I couldn't see a native sim "K_" value like there is for CWS?

@hughesj2 Mobiflight is a great free alternative to the paid solutions if you want to bind more stuff than default events.

I've made the design choice in all of my aircraft to stay away from assigning functionality to those uncommon commands, since they can change from version to version of flight sim, and you never know how people have their hardware set up. You shouldn't have to purchase hardware binding software just to make those two simple assignments, though. Perhaps FSUIPC would suffice, or there is another free alternative that someone can recommend here with more knowledge than me?

I can't imagine using any of the more advanced aircraft in the sim without an external control software. I want to be able to set up my the controls to match my hardware, like position of throttle or flap detents, how reverse thrust is activated, or just have the freedom to map any odd knob present in the virtual cockpit.
And not to mention problems with control settings in the sim, like CTD when managing profiles, long after each click on the controls screen, occasional wipe of all my control settings, to just name a few...
I use AxisAndOhs and I'm very happy with it. -
Personally I love MobiFlight for being completely free and open source and having a big database anyone can contribute to with all sorts of bindings and variables. Of course you can also just write whatever command you need.

For Black Square aircraft there are currently 954 inputs and outputs covering everything from an axis for setting sun visors to reading the current oxygen pressure from the sim.And to @Dingle - unfortunately I have never used Yourcontrols. If it reads all MSFS events it should probably be fine, but Mobiflight basically works the same way as all the paid alternatives, so if it doesn't work with them, it will probably be the same issue here.

@Black-Square That's a fair enough design principle Nick. I wonder if you've seen A2A's Input configurator (comes with the Comanche) I'm not sure if something similar would get around that issue? For now I've grabbed Mobiflight as recommended by @Avionic (Cheers Avionic) and had a play with it in the Duke to bind the OATMAPlight button on the pilot yoke and it seems OK if you can get your head around entering custom input variables, which is part of my point, not sure how accessible that is to everyone.
Cheers

The Comanche's configurator has been brought to my attention before. Creating desktop applications for my aircraft is well beyond the scope of how I like to work, and presents new problems when trying to make everything compatible for Marketplace and XBOX. Of course, anything is possible, but this has not been a focus of mine, since I write all my code with home cockpit builders in mind already by making sure that all functionality can be accessed externally.
@JetNoise Yes, all of my aircraft are delivered with printer friendly manuals now.

@Black-Square Fair enough Nick, thanks for the insights 👍🏼
