Radial / Offset behavior in Starship vs Baron's KNS-81 RNAV

After getting reacquainted with the KNS-81 RNAV unit in the Baron, I remembered that Starship has a similar feature where you can do a radial/distance offset for a waypoint. But while it looks like a similar function, it appears to work differently in Starship.
As I understand it, the KNS-81 creates a radial/distance offset from a VOR. When used for navigation, the KNS does the trigonometry internally to track the VOR radio signal to the offset.
Starship, on the other hand, creates a radial/distance offset from a waypoint, which does not have to be a VOR. As far as I can tell, it determines the lat/lon coordinates of the offset and creates a pseudo-waypoint which is tracked in FMS (not VOR) mode.
