First time this has ever happened on any flight. Baron 58P with KLN90B GPS. Departed Palo Alto (KPAO) IFR to Catalina Island (KAVX) using Say Intentions for ATC. Flight plan generated by SimBrief from within MSFS 2020. Routing: LICKE LKHRN PRB RZS VTU LAX
During the enroute phase to LKHRN I was set to GPS using the KLN90B for navigation but also set the KNS81 RNAV to tune the Panoche (PXN) VOR entering the 166 radial and a DME of 37 nm and set the KDI 572R to RNAV to read the DME readout for the waypoint. I am not sure if it was after passing this waypoint or before but I noticed that the KI 525A HSI CDI needle had fully deflected to the left. I could switch the MDI 41-328 to NAV mode and the CDI would behave normally and would respond correctly to being in NAV or RNAV mode. I first checked for failure modes in the panel radar display as well as the iPad interface, while there were no failures indicated I did hit the reset failures button in both. I tried setting the GPS mode to OBS and could rotate the CDI fully around with no change in needle behavior. I tried powering down the KLN90 and rebooting it but no change. I pulled the breaker for the HSI but found that the needle was stuck fully deflected to the left if in GPS mode. I'm thinking I confused the programming with the use of the DME in RNAV mode while flying the HSI and autopilot with the KLN90 in GPS mode but maybe something else. The aircraft still followed the GPS routing on autopilot and the KLN90 CDI display did indicate on route properly.

Did you try tapping on the glass? Might be a sticky needle.

I didn't try tapping the glass. Didn't even think of it because the needle would behave properly if the source was not GPS.
