Autopilot refuses to engage.

I cannot for the life of me get the AP to kick in. Is there some trick to this? Z key does nothing, pressing either AP button on the throttle quadrant or on the announciator panel above the altimeter also does nothing. It momentarily lights up and the next moment goes back to off.
I've tried straight and level flight with the trim set all happy for the plane, checked circuit breakers, very frustrating that I have to handfly this AC 100% of the time.
Using my trusty Saitek X52 Pro with the same assignment as all my other AC for which this function works fine.
Just not in the Duke.Autopilot toggle on/off just aint working...
Stumped on why.

there is a switch "pitch trim" down below the landing gear switch near the panel light dimmer ;)
it must be on.
From the manual :
"NOTE: The pitch trim power switch, located to the right of the panel lighting dimmers,
must be in the on position for the autopilot servos to control the aircraft." -
You are welcome !
