F-16 conformal tanks

Try as I might, I've not been able to get rid of the conformal tanks which appear no matter which version/skin of the F-16 I load. I've been able to work out how to load and unload weapons using the "payload" menu; and I can load and unload the three drop tanks using the "fuel" menu. But nothing I try seems to shift the seriously un-pretty conformal tanks. I'm sure it's operator error, but I've not found anything in the supplied aircraft manual or this forum which helps so any assistance would be gratefully received.

I can see why I was having problems with this: and am again. Having got this to work once, I'm now finding that when I set the Centrer 2 slider to 0%, either physically with the mouse pointer or by entering zero in the quantity box, it resets to 100% (thus replacing the conformal tanks) by the time I close the fuel window: thus in effect preventing the removal of the conformal tanks. This is as weird as it is frustrating!

I'm coming to the conclusion my inability to remove the conformal tanks (except, oddly, the one time I could) is connected with a wider issue I've got: when I turn off "Unlimited Fuel" in the Assistance Options I continue to fly without burning fuel and any attempt to adjust the fuel sliders gets reset. If I'm right this is an issue with my MSFS setup that just happens to show up in this aircraft because F-16 configuration changes are made via the fuel loading screen.
