@Black-Square mentioned that there are some unresolved Asobo MSFS 2024 bugs that affect Starship, so I decided to try some flights in MSFS 2020, and lo and behold, all the navigation issues I've been seeing are gone.

    • RNAV with GNS just works
    • GS just works
    • HDG mode does not mess with AUTO LEG
    • Custom tail sign just works

I feels like a more polished experience when these nav issues aren't there. If you want to learn the navigation system, I highly recommend using 2020 and use 2024 if you want to do simple flying with only VFR or just basic Starship FMS (ok, maybe ILS). I miss the walkaround features and the lighting looks less realistic, but at least you're far less likely to run into issues that aren't your fault.

Tell me about it... The solution that I'm working on now should at least solve many of these issues, though I have no control over the GNS, obviously. The tail numbers hurt me particularly, since I (don't) see them in every screenshot, but I know the rest is more important to the Starship flying experience in the meantime.

I feel like I had issues in 2024 as well, but it was in the beginning, so I assumed it was user error. I have done a fairly equal number of flights in both sims, and my latest 2024 flight were flawless. Having said that, I don't use the GNS, except for TCAS, and I only used HDG once and it didn't seem to matter when arming NAV.

Yes, the registration problem is an Asobo issue, from what I can tell, as are many other issues with 2024. 2020 was a bit of a disaster when it released, so I expect 2024 to need a few more updates before we are in a similar boat as 2020. 2024 AI is all over the place (e.g., low flying lost aircraft over airports), performance can be poor depending on your environment/aircraft, and a myriad of other things that are broken. I would venture to guess a lot of developers are still slow-rolling their products because Asobo is going to break them as they release updates. The sim just isn't stable yet. I have very few problems and prefer it, but it needs a lot of work.

We have a workaround for the tail number issue at least. The navigation issues are the bad ones, turns out everything works just as you described. I bet several other people were banging their heads against the wall trying to setup approaches and all along it was these 2024 bugs getting in the way.

I don't doubt that, which is really unfortunate. This is exactly why I have been slow to update my aircraft for MSFS 2024, just as @Orlaam said. Even today I read about something else that was broken in the latest SU Beta regarding GPS navigation. Hopefully I can get away from some of these by doing all my own navigation math and waypoint sequencing.

It's just gonna take a few more months. I mean look at all the logged items that are broken in 2024, lol. It's a long list. I live in Phoenix, AZ and I can't get the buildings or terrain to look anything like the real thing. 2020 looks way more accurate for me in PHX, but I swear I've seen V1 fly on his streams and PHX looked great. It's very strange.

The problem I think a lot of us have is the way MS/Asobo are creating a sim, updating it, then abandoning it for a newer version. The atmosphere, sky coloring, ground textures are so much better in 24, as is the FDE and other features like the tablet with charts and a good little planner. However, it'll be several months before we can positively say it's "stable". Heck, even AI traffic in 2020 with FSLTL is still goofy at times. In a way it's always been this way, FS2002, FS9, FSX all had relatively minor updates every 4 years, but they did break older add-ons. It's just that you had 4 solid years of code that didn't change. Now it's much like P3D where frequent updates require developers to go tweak things to continue to work. I don't envy developers in this regard, but make no mistake, the work you guys do is very much appreciated and I really enjoy some of the art we get.
