Turbine Duke minor tablet/cabin temp bug
-
Hi Nick,
first of all, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed an add-on as much as the Dukes.
I feel a bit silly for creating a thread for an insignificant issue like this but I noticed that in the Turbine Duke on the tablet cabin page, the target temp in the bottom right corner will not turn red if the system is not able to maintain set temp. While you're here I've got two more things:
I really like the new flight idle detent/snap into place in the T-Duke. Having no hardware detents and no additional software it was hard to find that exact spot in the TBM. I'd very much appreciate it if you could implement that in the upcoming TBM update, I assume you were already planning on doing so anyway.
Secondly I have a question about the air conditioning in the Turbine Duke. I have no irl experience in turboprop aircraft so I can't back that claim up but I feel like high-/flight idle should be enough to power the AC. I'm not sure if your environmental control system in the TBM is currently as advanced as in the Duke but in the TBM it does work in high flight idle. What's your opinion on this?
Cheers!
By the way, have you seen the Starship arriving at AirVenture? Can't wait to try out your rendition of it! -
That's exactly how I see it. There are some very good developers for airplane addons out there. But how do those - who are already at the top - differentiate themselves. By paying attention to detail, you stand out from the rest. To please the masses, 90% is enough. But trying to fulfill the remaining 10% (sometimes with little effort) is what sets one developer apart from the rest. Just my opinion. (That's why I especially like Flysimware besides BKSQ).
So, go for it :-) -
Hey Gentlemen. Thank you for your enthusiastic remarks about my aircraft. It's definitely that last 10% that I strive for, but I beg to differ about how easy it can be sometimes, haha. I think I've been working on that last 10% of the Starship for over a month now. I can't wait for you to enjoy it! What a singular flying experience. I have never flown a plane like it ever before in real life, or the simulator.
I too was wondering about the air conditioning clutch in the Turbine Duke, so I did a little research. The King Air has an annunciator specifically to warn the pilot when the Ng is too low to engage the air conditioning clutch, so it's definitely an operational concern, and exists for the same reason as the piston version, since you want to keep Ng high and ITT low during startup. For the King Air, the required Ng is 62%, which requires a little additional power above flight idle in most conditions where you would be using the air conditioner. I asked the Turbine Duke owner my aircraft is modelled after, and he confirmed that it often requires differential power lever settings, which is why he prefers not to use the air conditioning at all, since it puts differential wear on the two engines.
As for the TBM, it uses an electric air conditioning compressor, and a radically different environmental system, which will be on full display in the tablet after the update. Speaking of the update, I too wanted to see the power lever detent in the TBM, but had yet to do it. Since you asked, I will add that feature today. Unfortunately, it's the sound that has deterred me from doing it so far, since a hysteresis is needed to prevent it from clicking away when your hardware input jitters around. I will absolutely do it, since you asked, though.
Lastly, I looked at the code for the environment system target temperature in the Turbine Duke, and it is identical to the Piston Duke. Can you give me some more specifics on what scenario you have produced where the target temperature does not turn red? From the code, it can be approximated as...
Heating: Target temperature is greater than 60 degrees above the plenum temperature.
Cooling: Target temperature is less than 24 degrees below the plenum temperature. Thanks again, guys. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

It's done :) I forgot that the sound was already there, so it was much less trouble than I was expecting. Thanks for prompting me to add this feature.

The Starship has already been purchased. Be sure of that. I have appreciated your work and your attention to detail since your first release. Your work raises the bar and definitely stands out from the rest. And I will always support it. Can hardly wait to see what comes next.

Awesome, thank you for your quick response! This will be a major quality of life improvement for me in the TBM.

Very interesting input, thanks! That's what I was wondering about. I had to taxi with the left engine in beta and the right engine above idle which felt quite odd. It was too hot not to use the AC though.

Fortunately I took a screenshot. I was cruising at FL270, -33°C OAT and had the temp mode in auto heat. I played around with the press. air temp/bleed air handles and pushed both fully in. As expected the cabin temp started to decrease rapidly but the target temp did not turn red. I was under the impression that it would turn red as soon as the desired temperature was unable to be reached but if there is a threshold that probably explains it. I only waited a couple of seconds so I don't know how low the cabin temp would've gotten.
