When flying with the GARMIN 530, the GPS MSG often tells me to adjust the course on the VOR to correspond with the GPS. Also when setting up an ILS approach, I would need to go to VOR-mode.

Is it correct behaviour for this unit, that it automatically disconnect the autopilot from the GPS when I enter VOR-mode on the EHSI?

Sorry I didn't answer this immediately. I don't recall understanding your question the first time I read it, but I think I do now. The EFS 40 manual did not have any information on how the unit would interact with specific external sources of navigation, like the GNS 530. I remember making the conscious decision to implement it in the way you describe in an attempt to reduce the number of confused users who might wonder why the active source on the HSI was not driving the autopilot, or the active source on the GPS was not displayed on the EHSI. If this is a particularly important feature to you, I believe I could provide you relatively simple solution for "advanced users" if you were willing to edit some files.

Thank you for the information. It's not super important to me at the moment, but maybe you have someone in your beta-team that might know how it's supposed to work? The automatic disconnect of the GPS mode seems like a safety issue if it was in a real aircraft, although I understand why it makes sense to not confuse virtual pilots starting to learn the autopilot and EHSI unit.

Sorry to necro a relatively old thread but I'd be up for giving this a test if you wanted a willing guinnea pig?

@ExcessionOCP I will too. I wrote the modified code to get this to work in the TBM700 for FlyII so many years ago.

I've seen that the KNS81 now triggers new arm-modes on the autopilot, could it be that changing the source on the HSI should do the same? If so, one would be free to go to other NAV-modes on the HSI, to prepare course etc., without disengaging the current AP NAV mode.

It would make sense if it's how it works in the real aircraft? But I'm just guessing...
