How to set CRS for LOC1 when NAV source is GPS

    Hello fellow TBMmers,

    when I fly one GPS and prepare for an ILS landing, I struggle with setting the correct CRS for LOC1 without switching the NAV source.

    Does anyone know to stay on GPS and get the course set for LOC1?

    @roadrunner switching to hdg mode and the change from gps to ils/vor comes to mind...

    @baeflyer Thanks, this is how I am currently doing it. But it doesn't feel right...

    But at least I found out that apparently the GTN750 (and maybe the GNS530) will set CRS automatically when the right approach is selected. So maybe it's not really needed in real life.

    @roadrunner Yeah, the 750 seems to set the course automagically, but it doesn't seem to do it all the time. But I suspect that is down to the scenery or the navdata rather then the aircraft. I still check it though using the above suggested method anyway.

    @roadrunner I also use HDG to set the course on LOC1 and switch back to NAV.

    This is also no problem in real life.
    As long as you follow your route and ATC in an IFR flight you also could handlfly the bird.

    @roadrunner tried arming the app mode when the ils is tuned?

    @rhinozherous Yeah, you can do that. This is not unlike some C172 with retrofitted GPS.

    But it somehow feels not right in a plane that cost a couple millions...

    I've got some more POH for EFIS 40/50 and it really seems that there is no way of setting CRS for anything other than the active source.

    @roadrunner You can buy a multi million dollar Q400 that needs some work arounds for this ;)

    But I agree it is the only way.

    @mad_x Yeah, it's somehow weird that nowadays cheap <100k LSA/Ultralights have better avionics than multi-million $/€/whatever turbine planes.

    @roadrunner To be honest I find the Garmin avionics super cumbersome. I prefer an A320 of B737 FMC any day of the week. Also the Honeywell options, see the PC-12 and PC-24 seem to be more operator friendly.

    @mad_x The old Garmins are designed by people that hate pilots.
    But the G1000 is quite okay.

    In terms of GA navigation, I prefer to have it on my iPad these days. ForeFlight and Skydemon (in Europe) have become extremely good. I know the interface in and out. And all my flight plans and custom waypoints are already in there.
    Using a portable GNS 2000 receiver, I always have good sat reception.
