How to fly without pressurization?

What would be the correct setup to fly a low altitude VFR flight without pressurizing? If I just set up bleed air and air conditioning and leave the cabin alt dial on sea level or airport altitude, it will actually keep that pressure differential during the flight.
Do I always have to set cabin altitude to planned altitude +1000ft? Isn't there an easier way? Can I maybe leave the guarded dump switch on? -

That being said, you will get no AC that way as well. So, having cab.alt higher than cruise -- may be a better plan.
