King air: Autopilot VS mode

Hi!
I am having trouble using the VS mode of the King Air autopilot. With the autopilot engaged (e.g. in IAS mode) I click on VS to switch to VS mode and I am expecting that the current VS should now be the new desired control variable.
But, this is not the case and switching to VS mode results in a new target of VS=0 fpm and I have to quickly change the VS target in order not to level off.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a known bug (or maybe the correct way as the IRL autopilot behaves)?

@gimballock I use this setting to activate VS HOLD in Spad.Next and it's been working just fine so far.
