JF Arrow III Rudder Trim Issues
-
The JF Arrow III used to be one of my favorite aircraft to fly in the sim, but after we lost the mouse over % readouts on trim and throttle/propeller/mixture axis with Sim Update 5, I’ve been finding it pretty hard to trim out to fly level.
The rudder trim indicator does not seem to move no matter how much I scroll it left or right.
Could other Arrow pilots here give me any tips on what rudder trim settings they use for takeoff, climb and cruise? And could JustFlight confirm that the rudder trim indicator is functional or whether it is bugged?

@zkdos On my system the rudder trim control on the Turbo Arrow III (and the Arrow III) works correctly, it does move when you scroll with the mouse but it moves very slowly... and, the tooltip does show the % setting...
Also, there is a rudder trim indicator (white line) on top of the trim control housing, but it is not aligned properly and is not visible ( a bug has been submitted for this).
As for the recommended trim setting for takeoff, I like to use about 3 degrees of right rudder trim for both takeoff and climb out. After leveling off, I use the keyboard keys [ALT] + [Num 5] to quickly reset the rudder trim to 0.0%. Or, I just add left rudder trim until the slip ball is centered.

Thanks for the tips @retiredman93231, I've noticed it moving at a much slower rate than trim wheels in other aircraft. Is there an official way to report this as an issue to JF, or are these forums the only way to bring up issues that users encounter?

@zkdos On the JF website, click on the 'Support' link on the top right, then on 'New Support Ticket'. This link should also get you there: https://support.justflight.com/support/tickets/new

@retiredman93231 Hi. Can keystrokes be used to adjust rudder trim in MSFS rather than using the mouse ?
Thnx !

@gabe777 Yes, you can control the rudder trim using the default keyboard keys [CTRL]+[Num 0] for left rudder trim, and [CTRL]+[Num ENTER] for right rudder trim.
You can find the current key assignments by looking at SETTINGS / KEYBOARD. You can also easily change these key assignments to something more intuitive or convenient, or add any additional currently unassigned MSFS commands to the keyboard keys... For example, you could reassign the rudder trim commands to the keys [<] and [>] which would be more intuitive, and easier to press with one hand.

Excellent. Thank you for your reply.
Can I assume these trim controls will work for any aircraft... even if they do not actually have such trims in the aircraft, as we can in P3D/FSX etc ?
-
@gabe777 Yes, these keyboard trim commands will work in any aircraft that is configured with rudder trim... The aircraft flight_model.cfg file must have a rudder_trim_limit specified for it to work.
-
Oh.... I believe in the P3D model all 3 trims could be "faked".
Does this mean a simple hack to the aircraft.cfg file would give me a bunch of trims if not already specified in the config file ?
I hate that MSFS is such a hidden, protected system. It's so hard to know what can be found... let alone adjusted !
-
@gabe777 Yes...

Hi again.
What's you take on the rudder system in MSFS ?
I'M confused as the Auto rudder on takeoff setting suggests it doesn't use auto rudder in flight.
But coordinated turns do seem to be pretty automated regardless of the takeoff setting.
Many complain about sudden banks/instability immediately after takeoff, suggesting it may be due to the transition from auto rudder ON to disabling it ?
Also, I see rudder and aileron trim settings, but no center or reset trim settings. Some say there isn't one.
.... this isn't helped by the fact there are no central markings on the rudder trim in the Arrow 4.Would appreciate your input if you have time.
Thnx.
-
@gabe777 I never use the auto rudder feature in MSFS, because I like maximum realism when I fly and this aircraft does not have yaw damping. See my comments above about the rudder trim control markings and the keyboard command for centering it... I don't think there is a centering command for the aileron trim.
-
@retiredman93231 Hi.
So there is no auto rudder in MSFS? You do need to coordinate turns, cos it seems to be pretty stabke during turns with no rudder input.
-
@gabe777 This aircraft has differential ailerons (greater deflection up than down) to reduce the adverse yaw, and as a result it needs very little rudder input for coordinated turns.
-
@retiredman93231 Oh that's interesting. Thnx.
But in general dies MSFS employ an auto rudder to make it more accessible or do some aircraft require it for coordination?
I find it surprising that there doesn't appear to be an AutoRudder option, other than during takeoff, unlike P3D and FSX which did have the option.
-
@gabe777 Some aircraft, like the big commercial jets, have "Yaw Damping" which will atuomatically apply the required rudder input for coordinated turns. It is usually turned on/off with a switch.
-
@retiredman93231 Yes my PMDG 747 has one in P3d.
I have to disable auto rudder.... in tge settings. And the steering tiller is used for rollout until around 80 knots when it switches to rudder.
This is the problem... MSFS doesn't seem to know what it's doing with the rudder, and consequently it's causing a lot of confusion.
