unslave DG and autopilot behaviour

I'm trying to navigate in the north of Canada doing Grid Navigation with the BAe146. Unslaving the DG works but....the autopilot doesn't like turning to the heading bug anymore, and also altitude capture doesn't work. As it's not covered in the manual, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Jornt
