I'm used to enter along route waypoints in the format WPT/DIST. I tried it with the RJ and entered BTA/-20, this was the result:
    bta-20.jpg
So it obviously did not result in a waypoint along the route and instead generated a waypoint with no name. Is the real FMC capable of doing this? If not, why did I not receive an error message?

The FMS shows a route disconnect and does not recognise your input. Try using WPT/RADIAL/DIST.

(I’ve tried without success to edit/delete my earlier answer where I missed “not” from my sentence)

The route disconnect was not the problem. I edited the route before BTA (which resulted in the blank waypoint) so the disconnect should not matter at this point.
I also did not want to create a WPT/RADIAL/DIST waypoint. My question was if creating waypoints along a leg are supported by the FMC. Why did it create such a weird waypoint instead of generating an error message if it did not recognize my input?

OK. Let me answer your question as put. Yes, it is possible to place a ‘user defined’ waypoint within a route. Why no error msg? Ah, well… Sometimes typing garbage in can generate garbage out.

Thanks for confirming, that the FMC support along track waypoints. If my entry was garbage, then what is the correct format in this FMC for along track waypoints?

The real FMC does allow for the creation and insertion of pilot defined waypoints.

The ‘box-prompts’ on the FMS display image posted show a fix requires to be entered. The fix requires to be already in, or created within, the FMS database. The user defined fix can be created after accessing the data base, and inputting data in one of several ways, the easiest is Name/Radial/Distance.

Thank you Paul for taking your time to help me, but I'm not sure if you have yet understood my problem.
The route discontinuity is there for a reason and has nothing to do with my problem at all. I'm trying to insert a waypoint on the route 20NM before BTA. I tried doing it with BTA/-20 like it works in most other FMCs. This did not work in this FMC. I'm aware that I could have create a PBD waypoint, but I was specifically asking on how to create an along route waypoint.

Head shaking here… To insert an on route waypoint it will require to be created and within the database. It’s then insert into the FMS route. That is how to do it on this equipment. To me, that meets your requirement to insert a waypoint along route.

The only use I recall of using a position as WPT/DIST is when setting a require altitude requirement position.

This sounds precisely like what I try to do. I did not know, it needs to be inserted into the database first, before it can be inserted into the route. I can't find how to create it in the database, though. The REF NAV DATA page appears to be readonly to me. Can you please describe to me how I can enter a WPT/DIST waypoint in this unit?

That’s the way I see it on the sim.
