    Are lift spoilers meant to be activated somehow?

    ILS approach was bang-on at Cardiff but the flare was very poor, and I hit the RW at -550 fpm ... and although Lift Spoiler sign greened-up, they didn't deploy.

    Wondering if the air brake needs to be deployed manually before touchdown, and that arms spoilers ?

    Thnx

    (Not much in manual about Autolands.)

      As far as I know lift spoilers cannot be armed, but must be deployed manully.
      If You look at the spoiler lever You have two detends at the aft position the first detend is full speedbrake, the next is lift spoilers.

        In the RJ there is an AUTO SPLR switch on the overhead panel which powers the automatic deployment circuits for the lift spoilers. This switch should default to the ON position in all aircraft states as there's nothing in the aircraft's normal checklists that requires it to be switched off.

        As long as the LIFT SPLRS YEL, LIFT SPLRS GRN and AUTO SPLR switches on the overhead panel are in the ON position, the lift spoilers should automatically deploy on the landing, or during a rejected takeoff. For automatic deployment, there is no requirement to manually operate the airbrake/lift spoilers lever in the cockpit, but if the airbrake/lift spoilers lever isn't moved from the retracted position, the airbrake will not deploy and the lift spoilers will automatically retract once the ground speed decreases below 15 knots.

          @Wothan wrong, in the RJ they are deployed automatically (switch in the overheard beneath the AP/Yaw Damper etc switches.) its by default already in the on position.

              Weird mine didn't deploy.

              Have to keep experimenting. But 500fpm isn't good. It may be the 3rd Party airport though.

                @Mark Hi M.
                Is this auto deployment regardless of 'manually adjusted' air brake position ?

                I have this on an axis... although a shortened axis -- otherwise the Lifts can accidentally deployed in the air.

                I know one can have the air brake 'cone' deployed during landing.

                Begs the question as to why the Lifts are on the same axis... if they are designed to deploy automatically on landing.

                Have to look at RW manual.

                  Did you happen to have a lot of thrust at the time? If you increase thrust beyond a certain point, the Spoilers are inhibited. If they have deployed and you then increase thrust, they'll retract.

                  Cheers,

                    @flightstrike

                    Hi. No ... as auto-throttle was on and autoland, I'd reduced them 'physically' to idle.

                    But heh, it was my first autoland so I need to read the manual a bit more.

                    And I use a 3rd Party Cardiff EGFF so I know elevation and ILS angles can be 'problematic'.

                    Prolly a good idea to test it on a stock airport.
