Black Square 2024 Standalone Models - Compatible With 2020?
-
Again, Kudos to your work Nick. I find myself only using BSQ products.
I own all your addons except the BE36 and 58, will probably pick those up soon. But my favorite BSQ product is still the King Air, mostly because it being simply the King Air. With that being said, I understand that the King Air at some point will be updated for 2024 as a standalone product, but for those of us that will probably be still using MSFS 2020 when 2024 gets released, simply due to expected 2024 growing pains, will your 2024 products be compatible with 2020?

I'm glad you're enjoying all my products so much! The Baron and Bonanza will also be receiving updates soon (hopefully this week if everyone's schedules align), including some of the small detail features from the Dukes, like the lighting systems, better voltage simulation, and the RNAV autopilot. I hope you will enjoy!
Unfortunately, you know about as much as I do about version compatibility right now. From what we've been able to guess as developers, I would expect them to be backwards compatible, yes. If they are not, but I can make some small changes to make them backwards compatible, then I certainly will. I hope that's at least an encouraging answer! Thanks for asking!

Very happy to hear the Baron and Bonanza will be getting updated. I'm planning to get 2024 as soon as it's released, from everything I've heard it's going to be iterative, not revolutionary. I can't see Asobo or MS purposely trying to obsolete all the current 3rd party work. But there may obviously be some issues. I believe they've said they are releasing the SDK in September for 3rd party developers to start working on any updates to their software for 2024. I remain positive and hopeful.

My main concern about MSFS 2024 is potentially increased performance requirements, since my PC can just barely run MSFS 2020 acceptably and I won’t be able to upgrade for at least another couple of years. So I too am hoping that at least existing Black Square aircraft updates will retain 2020 compatibility if updated, and hopefully new ones will too.

@mysticfm Everything I've heard is that 2024 will run better than 2020, they are going to start optimizing the multi-threading to reduce the overall requirements (whatever that means). Again, I remain hopeful.
I hope that’s true, but the history of most new games hasn’t worked out that way, so I’m going to remain very cautious and see what people’s experiences are when it is released (and absolutely won’t pre-order).

Worth noting that, unlike previous iterations of FS, the hardware base (XBox X and S) will remain static between versions of the game. The equipment used by a large chunk of the potential buyers will be four years old by the time FS2024 comes out. The game will almost certainly run better on a state-of-the-art PC, but, as you can't (easily) shove a better graphics card or processor into your XBox, FS2024 will need to be optimised to run on older kit. Frustrating for developers and hardware junkies, but it's the price you pay for selling a console that will set a red line on game performance until you release the next one.

Your definition of “old hardware” may be different than mine. My gaming PC has an i7-6700k, and from what I understand it may not compare favorably to even an Xbox series S (which has twice as many cores, albeit slower). If FS2024 heavily leverages cores to the point where a 4 core CPU like mine isn’t going to be sufficient, then I’ll probably be stuck on 2020 for a while yet. But … time will tell.

This is the time on Sprockets when we dance … wait, no, it’s the time when I gently and sadly say “told ya so”. ;)
The recommended CPU spec for 2024 is out, and has jumped by about 50% from 2020. My i7-6700k was slightly above the recommended CPU spec for 2020, but falls short of even the minimum spec for 2024. Since I’m at least a couple of years away from being able to swing new hardware, I’ll be forced to stay on 2020 for quite a while yet. So I dearly hope the existing BlackSquare products don’t discard 2020 compatibility. (Mind you, I don’t think it’s quite reasonable to expect Black Square to keep supporting 2020 for new products … but I won’t be able to purchase and enjoy them.)
