    So I've been adjusting throttle and flaps to get down the Glideslope and hit the threshold at the correct landing speed.

    Not easy.

    Porpoising all over the place.

    Then I watched my old ITTV DVD and watched the pilots from the 1980s (ex-RAF pilots ... one Red Arrow !) and was utterly flabbergasted.

    They set the throttle 'before' entering the GS... and didn't touch it again until flare. I know, right ?!

    They simply went through the flap schedule starting at 18 at 200 kias, just prior to the GS capture all the way to 33 (?) ... and then, gradually slowed down using the airbrake and increasing flaps on schedule.

    All the time they just made small adjustments to the airbrake. No throttle adjustments.

    Clearly their experience of the aircraft behaviour/weight/air conditions etc., allowed them to guess, pretty much perfectly, the throttle power needed for hitting the threshold at the exact speed needed... before entering the GS.

    Astonishing.

    And this girls and boys, is why I'm always porpoising down the GS ... 'cos I'm using the throttle to control speed as though it's a twin prop .... Not cool !

      @gabe777 Yeah the buttflaps are great. I use them like that as well during approach, don't need to touch it at all until the threshold. Just little movements of the speed brake and you're golden.

        Oh, I was not familiar with that method.
        Is this the ITV documentary that you mentioned?

          @dirkster That's it yup.

          Watch the second landing I think... they don't touch the throttle as far as I can tell.

          I guess they just know their aircraft so well.
