Is it possible to make any of the pointers on the HSI (or anywhere else, but the green TACAN pointer would be ideal) point at the next gps waypoint so I don't need to have the GPS displayed to hand fly the magenta line ? I can't see a way looking at the manual, but it's coming up on 2am here so I may well be missing something 🙂

    Cheers

@grol Just pointing to the bearing of the next waypoint would not allow you to follow the magenta course line, because you need to fly at a crabbed heading to compensate for cross winds in order to follow a straight GPS course.

@retiredman93231 Well yes, that's why I didn't say I wanted to point the Hawk at the waypoint, just an indicator needle.

@grol You can set the HSI from NAV to GPS tracking mode by flipping the Antenna switch on the right console to Lower (turn on tooltips to be sure that's the correct switch position).

@retiredman93231 Correct answer, but to the wrong question. The UHF Antenna switch makes the autopilot dial in the desired course to each waypoint on the HSI after which the deviation indicator gives more precise track information while the autopilot flies there - the key part there being "makes the autopilot dial in the desired course to each waypoint". I don't want to mess around looking up and dialing in desired courses while I'm trying to fly through a cloud which holds more than its fair share of sharp pointy rocks, I want something to automatically point to each waypoint as I fly along a gps route. In my experience no combination of the UHF Antenna switch / Nav Mode Selector / TACAN controller / ILS controller will make anything point towards a GPS waypoint. I'm more than happy to be corrected on this.

            Cheers.

Currently the HSI green bearing pointer will only show bearings to TACANs or VORs and not GPS waypoints, although that could be added as a feature when the UHF antenna is set to GPS.

@martyn That would be a very nice QOL thing if it were to happen at some point ! and I think it would more closely match what we see in RAF videos where the pilots seem to just follow the green pointer around quite complex routes which is what I'm trying to do 🙂

                Cheers

@martyn I just woke up (in New Zealand) and that email was the 1st thing I saw on the computer. I'm gobsmacked, that was so fast ! Adding the TACAN to VOR frequency conversions to the checklist was a relatively simple addition but this ... you must have had this lined up already, this can't possibly be a response to something I said 24 hours ago ! (but I'm going to claim it is anyway 😄 )

                    Thank you !
