Can I edit the Instrument Views? (cameras.cfg)
-
I have the Arrow and Turbo Arrow for FS 2024 (and 2020).
I would like more custom cameras than the 10 I have access to.
So I would like to change some of the instrument views in cameras.cfg.
I edited the cameras.cfg in the Community folder but the changes do not appear in the simulator. The file has a gold lock on it but I was able to edit it.
Is it possible for me to change the default instrument views? -
The camera.cfgs are located in the LocalCache folders (which will likely have a 'lock' icon on them) are where user-created custom cameras are saved. For example, if you press CTRL+ALT+1 whilst in the sim, that is where that camera information is saved.
If you wish to edit the camera views that we include with the product, then you will need to edit the camera.cfg located within the aircraft package in the Community folder. For the Arrow III, that is located at the following file directory:
...\Community\justflight-aircraft-pa28-arrow-iii\SimObjects\Airplanes\JF_PA28_Arrow
Note: In MSFS 2024, you will need to update the packages layout.json file in order for any changes to properly take effect. For that, we would recommend the following free tool: https://github.com/HughesMDflyer4/MSFSLayoutGenerator
Hope that helps.

The files all have the lock on them in this Community folder:
'C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\justflight-aircraft-pa28-arrow-iii\SimObjects\Airplanes\JF_PA28_Arrow'
That is where the installer put it. There is another 'Community 2024' folder that has no lock on it. -
Do you perhaps have the marketplace version of the Arrow III? If so, then the camera.cfg in the aircraft package will likely be encrypted (indicated by the 'lock' symbol on the file), and the file won't be directly modifiable.
It may be possible to create a separate camera.cfg as a mod that 'overwrites' the camera.cfg included in a marketplace product; however, that is not something I have personally tried, so I wouldn't be able to comment on its validity. There is a thread on the official MSFS Forum covering that process here: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/camera-cfg-file-for-marketplace-aircraft/748080
