Terrain display on vintage aircraft

In areas of high terrain, I see the TAWS provides " Look-ahead terrain and display alert" - but am I to understand this is only for excessive terrain closure? Did the aircraft use the ground mapping function of the radar as a sort of terrain feature on the EHSI?

The way I understand it, the real aircraft uses a mixture of an internal airport/terrain database, as well as flight data based on the ADCs/Radio Altitude, to determine the aircraft's proximity to terrain.
The aircraft doesn't have a 'terrain radar' as such, so it uses the weather radar to detect any terrain surrounding the aircraft.

On this topic: is terrain mode/mapping actually simulated? And if so, how do I turn it on? I've tried several things but I've never been able to display any terrain.

Terrain returns aren't currently simulated with the weather radar functionality. We did initially do some work on that feature prior to release, but ran into a few roadblocks. It's currently logged on our internal feature request tracker and something we would like to add in a future update.
