    What should the TMS ideally be set to during the above phases? Should it be off, or still in the descent mode?

    I keep seeing conflicting recommendations.

      The standard procedure in the 146 is for the TMS to be disconnected at 200ft. Some aircraft can disconnect the TMS automatically when passing through 200ft radio altitude, other aircraft require this to be disconnected manually.

        Perfect, thank you. Decent mode until then though, right? To ensure the hydraulics and electrics are sound?

          The purpose of DESC mode on the TMS is to control the minimum engine N2 to ensure that sufficient air is always being supplied to the air conditioning and ice protection systems.

          So you would typically use DESC mode during descent to keep the engine N2 above the normal flight idle, and then during the approach the engines will likely be at a higher power setting, so SYNC mode would normally be used.

            In service, very, very few pilots used the DSC mode for descent. It is far easier to descend in IAS/Mach with TMS N1 Sync (to achieve the required ROD) and to transit to V/S mode when required, while (of course) observing the minimum N2 limits.
