    Hello,
    This is my first post. I have just purchased the Piper PA-28 Arrow 111. I have attempted the Tutorial in the manual, and I am new to the basics of navigation with VOR, NDB, etc. I just have some questions about the instruction that is not clear to me. From the Tutorial:

    "When the KN 62 shows that we are three miles from the Goodwood VOR, rotate the heading bug on the horizontal situation indicator to match up with your current heading and then rotate the navigation/approach coupler knob to the HDG position. The autopilot will now maintain our current heading.
    Now use the heading bug to track towards the NDB, using the ADF indicator to estimate what heading is required for a direct routing to the NDB."

    Question 1 - "rotate the heading bug on the horizontal situation indicator to match up with your current heading" - does this mean to rotate the Heading Bug on the HSI to match up to the vertical white line, or the yellow arrow?

    Question 2 - "Now use the heading bug to track towards the NDB, using the ADF indicator to estimate what heading is required for a direct routing to the NDB." - unclear about this - does this mean to use the Heading Bug on the HSI to match the white arrow on the ADF Indicator? That is, to turn the HSI Heading Bug to the degrees to match where the arrow on the ADF Indicator is pointing to?

    Question 1

    It means line up the heading bug with the white line (called the "lubber line"). This allows you to keep flying in the right direction when the VOR signal is unreliable as you fly overhead

    Question 2

    Your understanding is correct. Assuming you have the proper ADF frequency tuned, spin the compass card on the ADF indicator so that the heading at the top matches your current heading. Then look at what heading the arrow on the ADK indicator is pointing to, and turn the heading bug to that direction.

    Note the ADF won't automatically keep your heading at the top, so as you turn the white arrow becomes "inaccurate" (in a sense; it points "toward" the NDB, but the compass card doesn't follow your heading).
