Smoking from exhaust/engine cowling

My otherwise excellent PA28 has started leaving a smoke trail, and when I land to investigate, I appear to have steam or white smoke emanating from the front of the engine.
I can't find any indications from the cockpit of any problem, and I can't find any information in the manuals on how to diagnose this, and to work out if I have done anything to cause this.
Any suggestion would be most welcome.
