Retro AI Traffic expansion
-
Has JustFlight considered the possibility of working on a retro expansion of the traffic global? There is still world flight timetables for every decade since the 60s available, so I can’t imagine getting the flight data would be very hard. It would also require new AI models for older aircraft, but I would happily pay the same price as the base package for this expansion to see it, as well as probably many others. Considering all of the older aircraft JustFlight has released, it would only make sense to create retro AI to make the world just a little more realistic depending on the kind of planes you’re flying around.

Looked at it about 15 years ago. It was a function of Traffic 2005 that was never activated. The problem is that in order for it to work properly, as well as the aircraft, you would need period scenery and airports. There isn't the demand to justify the work involved. Also, worth bearing in mind that things would be a lot quieter than they are today. A lot less GA and you wouldn't see any Vickers Viscounts landing at Chek Lap Kok or BAC 1-11s leaving Stansted.

@Derek I mean I wouldn’t necessarily say it needs period correct airports, beyond surface level additions. And there’s not that many defunct major airports missing from the world, the big 3 that come to my mind are Kai Tak(which there is payware for, as well as being in FSX), Fornebu, and Stapleton. I think there are a couple in Asia and the pacific as well, but all in all I don’t think it’s really that many. Really the biggest thing is just having period correct aircraft around you, at least for me. Of course I’d love a period correct world but we all know that’s fairly impractical.

@Noob21
Of course, you may very well already be aware of these...
Avsim has a good many retroai packages which are relatively easy to install manually.
As I switch between a range of various ai in FSX, I've found these work really well to at least introduce period planes into the sim. Contemporary scenery is also available and can be installed in a separate scenery.cfg so you can then switch between that and one containing modern airports.
Though it's based on FS9, CalClassics' packages give the sim a really 'period' experience, especially as you can download contemporary airport scenery from the site as well.
Since I really enjoy a bit of 'virtual plane spotting', this covers the 60s & 70s and retroai in FSX covers the following decades. -
@Capt-Quirk I am certainly aware of the calclassic package, though that only accounts for the late 50s and early 60s, nothing beyond that. Everything between 1965 and 2005 needs a bunch of manual scouring of paints and then manual installation. I think there is a market for an easy install addon of the aircraft between those time periods for sure. And there are a few aircraft that haven’t had new AI models in well over a decade anyways.

@Capt-Quirk as a member of the 1998 program, we’ve tried, but AIG has been pedantic

Well, there's a surprise! :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:
No wonder you're all too well aware of CalClassics and all the retro repaint packages!
However, it does give me the chance to express my gratitude to yourself and all those involved in a project that surely must take up many hours of your time.
As a mere user who has benefited greatly from the selfless efforts of so many talented folk, may I say a heartfelt thank you!!:star-struck: -
