First 24 flight impressions
-
Completed my first flight in the new sim once i had a load in with the FMC working. Noticed just a few things that were different from flying the RJ in 2020.
Assumptions:
-When I use the term "performance" i refer to the aircraft and how it is flying, burning fuel and making its way through the simulated world, not the performance of the sim or the fps or any of that stuff.
-I am also not making any comments on whether one version is better or more realistic. I am trying to note the differences between the behavior of the same aircraft in two different simulations, with the RJ being the control you can say, since i dont know how it flies in real life, and i fly it a lot on 2020, to where i am pretty familiar with its characteristics across the standard flight envelope, in normal conditions.
-I am also not refering to the avionics or the systems of the air craft and their functionality between sims. They seem to work one for one as far as i can tell.
-Finally I am assuming no changes to the flight characteristics were made to the 2024 version of the aircraft, so i am imagining the differences are all from the new sim's environmental modeling. Here is what I noticed:
-Aircraft accelerated a lot slower towards clean speed then the 2020 version with the flaps deployed, even at max climb setting. (after flaps up it was very similiar to flaps up climb from 2020).
-The climb rates across all phases of climb were lower then those of 2020 following the same climb out procedure, speeds and ambient conditions.
-Values at time/fuel checkpoints were different then they usually were compared to 2020, maybe the new sim simulates fuel burn better or worse due to atmospheric modeling and resistance and speed. (The timings from the simbrief flight plan were off on the time at the checkpoint and the fob was more and less accurate at different times then i saw in 20).
-During descent the aircraft felt slipperier then 2020 and required me to use more speed brake to control speed but never became unmanageable, id say the 24 one felt more "realistic" for an airliner that is descending and trying to slow down at the same time.
-At localizer capture on long final prior to GS capture distance aircraft started hunting aggressively, i selected hdg mode to mitigate but i think the turbulence simulation was just too much.
-The new turbulence (mine this time was on realistic), i think made the AP freak out a little bit during that long final causing to bank aggressively to to try to stay on track in a strange zigzag even in HDG mpde.
-Eventually i settled into a nice final, captured the glideslope and had a very nice approach and landing, felt very good.
-The map app never loaded the map but flickered and was black
-The enroute charts also were black and didnt load
-Overall the flight performance felt different then 2020 as far aircraft flight characterisrics, probably due to new modeling of weather in the sim -
Thank you for the detailed feedback. We have logged this feedback and we will continue to monitor other user's feedback to see if there may be a consensus between users.
With regards to the "Turbulence" option, we always found the "realistic" option to be too aggressive in MSFS 2020 (also backed up by real-world pilots on our testing teams saying similar) and we have recommended users to try using the "Low" or "Medium" Turbulence options to see if they have a better experience.
From my personal experience in MSFS 2024, the "Realistic" option appears to be even more aggressive than in MSFS 2020, creating stronger gusts and general turbulence at all altitudes. There have been no changes made to the flight model between the MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 versions, so the Turbulence option could be the reason why you are seeing differing performance between the two simulators. On your future flights, it may be worth setting that to "Low" or "Medium" and seeing if that is preferable.
