What is the function of the AUTO in the F70?

I attempted to start the engines with ignition in AUTO, and got a very loud GPU sound (and very low N2 spoolup).

It was in the F70 that this happened, I have not tried in the F100. Once I did nothing else but switch to NORM, the N2 spooled up just fine. I believe the APU bleed pressure was unchanged.

Low N2 spooling sounds more like an APU bleed issue. The GPU (Ground Power Unit) would have nothing to do with the starting of engines and would in fact be disconnected at the time of engine start. Did you have the APU running?
